I scraped ice off of my car this morning and finally accepted that fall is here. When the weather starts to turn and fall boots, textured tights, and cozy sweaters take over, I am also drawn to the beauty that is fall in Concord. I love to enjoy the little, pure comforts of life; whether it is the turning of the leaves, rows of pumpkins lined up, the sweet crunch of an apple right off of the tree, or the smell of a crackling fire. This desire was a huge motivator behind our choice to offer artisanal pour-over coffee. We procure the beans from CQ coffee roasters out of Bedford, NH where they use Direct Trade practices. This means that they have negotiated a price with the farmer at the “farm gate,” thereby bypassing import and export fees, ensuring that they pay above Fair Trade minimums. It isn’t a coincidence that these farmers provide some of the most high-quality beans in the world. All of her coffees submitted to the prestigious Coffee Review have scored above 90+ points. She is passionate and vigilant about the quality of her product, and it shows. Each roast has a story and celebrates the flavor of the earth from where it came. This sense of terroir comes through in each cup. Today, we are offering an Ethiopian Dry Process coffee which has notes of Pineapple and Berries with a Butter finish, as well as a Decaf option that has notes of Dried Stone Fruit and Oatmeal Cookie. Here’s to savoring the moment.

In the winter of 2004, I realized that I needed to re-establish my relationship with food, and discover a journey to better health. I was exhausted and confused by trying to choose “healthy” things to eat, and was searching for a simpler way. Through some reading and common sense, I decided that a “healthy” food is one that your body can recognize and completely break down. Too bad Michael Pollan’s In Defense of Food hadn’t been published yet. His philosophy, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants,” pretty much nails it.
